X Census (for 1.10)

Following is the census of 1.10 window for all X infrastructure – raw numbers here. I did it in a similar way as the previous version. Worth to mention that there’s almost no relation between the cycles of development from each of the components listed below, which can lead to some misunderstanding. Anyway, still a nice indicative to see and evaluate how the free desktop community behaved.

About Nokia and Microsoft alliance? I was deeply shocked yes, but well, I guess I’m cool and over it now. I’m sure MeeGo is not dead by any chance though… Nevertheless, Nokia’s contribution to X11 development will be obviously diminishing. It’s sad. Our Graphics Team were just feeling the first effects of the new introduced culture for pushing whatever work (well the ones we are allowed) to upstream and now all was cracked down. So, unfortunately this won’t happen with the same volume anymore and the collected numbers of 1.10 is definitely a mark for Nokia.

multiseat with multiple X servers (or “the right way”)

So last week I posted on lkml an old patch that we were carrying for a long time in the Linux community. It basically brings the multiple (old) video cards functionally again on Linux and X server (and this time doing on the right and beauty way). For the people that was following multiseat implementations, this is a HUGE step: we will finally be able to discard the old and ugly hack (a mix of Xorg, several Xephyr servers + evdev) and and go to a clean way, starting multiple X servers in parallel. Cool! Well, not that much, because it might take some time to be in your beloved distribution :)

It’s too early and I don’t know if it’s recommended to say this, but if you want to give a try basically you have to get all X components, this X server patches, my libpciaccess and Dave’s kernel patchset. Again: it’s a very unstable work!

Priorities and scheduling hints for X server threads

Input events routed through another thread/process can have bad effects on latency because we can’t guarantee that it will get scheduled at the right moment. Although this is hard to see happening with the current X server threaded implementation, we must design something to avoid it. One way to improve the responsiveness is to give a high priority to the input thread and also adjust the CPU scheduling. (Note that this will not avoid problems related with page faults which usually happen in the X input flow.)

Linux uses 1:1 thread model and the scheduler handles every thread as a process. For now I don’t care about others systems. Both input generation and processing threads was designed to sleep after a relatively short CPU run. So we can give a priority to processes that are trusted to not hog the CPU. And given they are special time-critical applications I have no doubt in what policy to use: I set both input threads to use the real-time FIFO policy and to get the maximum priority (sched_get_priority_max()).

I’m sure that someone will complain telling that this would decrease a bit the main thread when used together with both input threads. In GUI we’re talking about better user experience. Latency variability must be avoided whenever possible in interactive situations. What the user see is what matters. For non-interactive processes (server scheduling workloads) the situation is totally different.

Xorg’s philosophy is to be portable so we have to take care when setting this kind of parameters. It is a complex issue and different systems do it in wildly different ways. I was using my Linux box (2.6.24) to design it all.

VGA arbiter: removing RAC

The Resource Access Control inside Xorg is the guy responsible to take care of the various resources of memory and to share them in a wise manner when two or more graphics devices are active (think multi-head). As an alternative from RAC we can rely on VGA arbiter. So me and Paulo Zanoni spent the last days implementing “the glue” of Xorg to use the arbiter code with this purpose.

Now we’re trying to do some experiments to see what’s the performance difference using the RAC and the arbiter. We thought in two tests: (a) a multi-head X with RAC and other with the arbiter. And (b), test a single-head X using the arbiter and other not using. In the (a), we can evaluate if the usage of the arbiter overloads the X server and (b) if there’s some difference in use RAC or arbiter in a multi-head environment. So we ran the x11perf tool and reported a very tiny worthless gap in both tests (used with -comppixwin500, -move and -rect500 options). All the experiments you can see here:

Am I missing something about how I did these results or everything seems fine?

(I made the mistake to test this things using CFLAGS=’-g3 -O0′. Anyone knows if this will result in different conclusions between the two test cases? I’m using the git upstream code of server-1.4-branch and nv driver)

Anyway, we will keep our working and the next challenge will be to think about DRI, xv and GL.
